Description North Atlantic sea scallops (Placopecten magellanicus) are prized by chefs around the world for their sweet, delicate meat. Our North Atlantic scallops are all natural and “dry pack”, which means no water or chemicals have been added. These high quality scallops have a firm texture, distinctly sweet aroma and creamy white color, although there may be some normal light tan or pink coloration. Generously sized at 10 to 20 pieces per pound, they are great for hotate sushi. Should you choose to cook your scallops, they will sear up perfectly in just a couple of minutes and make for a stunning center of plate presentation or appetizer! The Fishery Dating back to the 1960s, long-term declines in the abundance of Atlantic sea scallops caused new management measures to be introduced in 1994. This program included new restrictions on scallop permits and gear, size requirements and harvest limits, and placing vessel monitoring systems on limited access scallop vessels. Today, the New England Fishery Management Council manages Atlantic sea scallops in cooperation with the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council under the Atlantic Sea Scallop Fisheries Management Plan (FMP). As a result, Atlantic sea scallop population levels are near record highs and the fishery operates at sustainable levels.
